Why I Left the SOC

For five years, my job was to react. An alert fires, you triage it, you decide if it matters, you respond. Repeat a few thousand times a month. You get good at it — fast, accurate, calm under pressure. And then one day you realize the whole model is upside down.

Reactive security breaks at scale. No matter how good your analysts are, you're always behind. The attacker chooses the time, the place, and the method. You're just trying to keep up. The only real leverage is upstream — in how the systems are designed, how the signals are shaped, what gets built before the alert ever fires.

That's the shift that moved me from operator to builder. From triaging alerts to owning the product that decides which alerts exist in the first place. It's the difference between bailing water and fixing the hull.
